6 steps for a great essay

BRAINSTORM!
Write a list of all of the things that interest and excite you. Include accomplishments, lessons, vulnerabilities, characteristics, hobbies, and themes from your life. Consider working with someone who knows you well.

EXAMINE!
Review this list with a fine tooth comb. Look for connections, themes, parallels, and threads that could be strung together for an interesting story. Connect these ideas with particular prompts from select colleges.

START WRITING!
Just do it. Pen to paper. Let it all flow. Understand that this is the first draft and a way to just begin. Make sure you have a hook to get the reader interested and hold their attention with a good thread or theme. Don't forget a strong conclusion that has a connection to the school of interest.

DISCUSS!
Talk with someone about your essay draft and read it aloud. Be open minded and take notes on the conversation, then write your second draft. Or third draft. Don't be afraid to try different angles.
